Sciatica Care in North York

Sciatica can feel sharp, burning, or electric, often starting in the lower back and travelling down the leg. For some, it’s constant. For others, it comes and goes, triggered by sitting, standing, or movement. When it lingers, it may affect sleep, work, and daily routines.

North York chiropractor Dr. David Weyrauch has decades of experience working with complex and chronic cases, including those that haven’t responded to typical approaches. His focus is not just on where the pain is, but how the nervous system and brain are involved in keeping that pattern active.

NEW PATIENTS

More Than a Pinched Nerve

Sciatica is commonly linked to irritation of the sciatic nerve, the largest nerve in the body. Symptoms may include radiating leg pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness. Many people are told it’s a disc issue or muscle tightness. While that can be part of it, it doesn’t always explain why symptoms return or never fully resolve.

In many offices, the focus stays on the site of pain alone. We look deeper, considering how posture, past injuries, and stress patterns all contribute to the cause of sciatic pain.

This is not a pain-only approach. It’s not wellness-only care. And it’s not traditional chiropractic, focused only on the spine. It’s a nervous system-driven model used to reveal the various components necessary to correct and restore the body’s capacity to heal itself.

How We Approach Sciatica at Chiropractic Health Centre

Dr. Weyrauch is known for taking a detailed approach to assessment. His work is built around Results Oriented Care, or ROC, an approach developed in our practice to help identify where the nervous system is compromised in its function of expressing health in all tissues of the body, resulting in pain, tension, weakness, and restricted mobility.

This approach may include:

  • EEG-based assessments is used to evaluate aspects of nervous system activity – the two systems of the autonomic nervous system, which regulate the body’s ability to adapt (sympathetic) and heal (parasympathetic).
  • Computerized posture analysis helps reveal areas of the spinal cord, which are compromised.
  • A blend of instrument-assisted and manual adjustments to restore function within the nervous system to aid in healing.
  • A history of physical, mental/ emotional, and environmental stressors, and stress patterns.

When Sciatica Becomes a Long-Term Problem

Some cases of sciatica settle down fairly quickly. Others display a pattern of flaring up and even shifting side to side. When that happens, the issue may involve more than local irritation in the lower back.

That is where our chiropractor’s perspective makes a difference. As a chiropractor focused on ongoing or more involved cases, he looks at how the brain and body coordinate, not just where it hurts.

Sciatica in Active Individuals

Athletes often deal with sciatica differently from others. Repetitive motion, impact, rotation, and training load can all add up. Pain may show up during performance, after activity, or while recovering.

Care focuses on restoring the body’s capacity to heal itself by correcting underlying areas of stress on the nervous system. Through this holistic approach, patients notice an ease in pain and tension along with increased mobility. All this results in being able to resume the normal activities of life.

When You’re Dealing With Prenatal Discomfort

Pregnancy changes posture, weight distribution, and joint stability. These shifts may place added pressure on the sciatic nerve.

We take these changes into account, using gentle, individualized techniques to help reduce tension and restore function of the body. The goal is to optimize your nervous system both increasing your body’s capacity to carry the added weight of pregnancy and your ability to deliver your baby.
