Chiropractic Care for Older Adults
One of the most important things for older adults to understand about chiropractic care is that it is a natural approach. We are not putting anything unnatural into the body, and we are not taking anything out. We are working with the body’s own capacity to function, adapt, and heal.
This concept does not exclude older adults. Just because you are an older adult does not mean your body has lost its capacity to heal. Your body will heal at the rate it is capable of healing. What must be done is to identify and address the cause of the problem.
Looking Beyond Where You Feel Pain
Most older adults come to our office because of concerns involving the lower back, hips, knees, neck, balance, mobility, or joint stiffness. These problems may affect walking, getting out of a chair, climbing stairs, gardening, driving, or enjoying everyday activities.
We assess the nervous system as a whole. Your lower back, hips, or knees may be where you feel the problem, but they are only part of the picture.
At Chiropractic Health Centre, every person begins with a thorough assessment because every person is different. Rather than making assumptions, we identify the factors that may be contributing to reduced movement and function before making recommendations.
The Brain Stem is Like a Computer
One area we commonly assess is the brain stem region of the nervous system. You can think of the brain stem like a computer. It helps regulate posture, balance, coordination, movement, and many automatic body functions while processing information from the rest of the body.
Irritation in this area may affect how efficiently the nervous system communicates. Some people also come to us with concerns involving sleep, energy, attentiveness, focus, or memory. Chiropractic care is not a treatment for these concerns, but assessing the entire nervous system helps us understand the bigger picture.

A Different Approach for an Older Body
Older adults are different from children. Their bodies are different and are often less supple, so the approach needs to be different.
For well over 30 years, Dr. David Weyrauch has used a gentle adjusting instrument. Rather than relying on the hands to create the adjustment, the instrument delivers a controlled mechanical impulse to specific areas of the spine. This allows the adjustment to be gentle, specific, and delivered with very little physical force.
This individualized approach reflects our Results Oriented Care™ philosophy. Care is adapted to each person’s age, health status, comfort level, examination findings, and progress.
No Tricks and No Surprises
Nothing is done without first explaining what is being recommended and receiving your consent. You will know what to expect before anything is done.
What Happens During Your First Two Visits
Your first visit is designed to determine what may be causing your problem through a thorough assessment. At your second visit, the findings and recommendations are explained in straightforward language. When appropriate, simple stretches, exercises, nutrition, or lifestyle recommendations may complement your care.
